Stripers Swimmers Shine in Early 2010 Events

The 33rd Annual Maryland Masters Winter Swim Meet held on March 6 and 7 at the University of Maryland in Catonsville was attended by Charlotte Hollings, Dick Scott and Kathryn Gregory from the Northern Neck Family YMCA Masters Swim team.  The group returned with a total of 11 first places, 4 seconds and one fourth.  Hollings’ first place swim in the 1650-yard freestyle was distinguished by a “Best-in-event” finish, meaning she was first of all ages in contention, both male and female, reported coach Gregory, “This is the ‘bell lap’ of the fastest heat, and quite an accomplishment,” she explained. Hollings also set an additional two Virginia state record-breaking times, to bring her record count to 14.

Five members of the Striper Team participated in the “Dreaming of Spring” Masters Swim Meet held on March 14 at the Warrenton Virginia Aquatics Center .  Hollings, Scott, Gregory, Andrea Lattell, and Nick Borst collectively received 18 first places, 4 seconds and 1 third.  Hollings, Scott, and Borst finished first in all their events.

During January the team also fielded 13 members accepting the fitness challenge of swimming as many yards as possible in one hour’s time:  Charlotte Hollings, Andrea Latell, Esther Platsis, Ray Funkhouser, Kathryn Gregory, Will Stallings, Caz Mullaney, Nick Borst, Susan Stallings, Donna Funkhouser, Pat Sikora, Jessica Servis, and Michelle Lybarger.  Results were submitted by mail and compared with others nationally.  Highest finisher, Hollings was 5th in her age group, which included a total 274 women.
