Virginia Beach Meet

Eight swimmers from the Stripers competed in Virginia Beach on November 6.  The 30th Virginia Masters Fall Short Course Meters Meet was held at Bayside Recreation Center. Participating were Richard (Dick) Scott, Donna Funkhouser, Ray Funkhouser, Scott Kauffman, Esther Platsis-Glover, Andrea Latell, Kirsten Halverson and team coach, Kathryn Gregory.


Scott set three Virginia state records in the 1500-meter freestyle, 400-meter individual medley and the 200-meter butterfly. Those events, deemed the most difficult in pool competition, completed in a 24-hour period also qualify Scott as a member of the Brute Squad, a fitness category. He also finished first in the 50-meter breast stroke. Scott has now broken 21 total existing state records.


Kauffman smashed Virginia state records in his first place swims for the 50-meter free, 100-meter free and the 50-meter butterfly.


Rookie Striper, Halverson, placed first in the 50-meter freestyle, 100-meter breast stroke, second in the 100-meter back stroke and third in the 100-meter individual medley.


Latell received firsts in the 200-meter breast stroke, and 400-meter individual medley (a personal record time), seconds in the 800-meter freestyle (personal record time) and 200-meter back stroke.


Platsis-Glover finished first in the 800-meter freestyle, 200-meter back stroke, 50 breast stroke, and 200 fly.  She received a second in the 400 individual medley.


Donna Funkhouser placed first in the 800-meter freestyle,; it was also a personal record time.  Ray Funkhouser, placed first in the 800-meter freestyle, a personal record, and first in the 50-meter breast stroke.


Gregory received first places in the 100-meter back stroke, 200-meter back stroke, and 100-meter individual medley.  She finished second in the 100 and 200-meter breast stroke events.

The meet saw two world records set for the womens 280-319 400 Individual medley and a mixed 100-119 400 Individual medley relay.
