Nine participants with the Northern Neck Family YMCA Masters Swim Team, the Stripers, brought home excellent results from the Virginia Masters Chris Greene Lake Swim held on July 9 in Charlottesville. The race was a ¼ mile cable course which was circled for two miles in the first event, and one mile for the second. There were 198 total competitors ages 21 to 89.

Ray Funkhouser, Esther Glover, and Sue McKerns swam the 2-mile course.  Carolyn Alsup, Betsy Chambers, Donna Funkhouser, Caz Mullaney, Michele Faulkner, and team coach, Kathryn Gregory, completed the 1-mile course.  The group received two first and one third places, and accomplished eight personal record times.

Gregory noted, “The brave first-time open water swimmers, including Alsup, the two Funkhousers, and Mullaney, were amazingly poised. Alsup sped to a first place finish in a packed and extremely competitive age group.”

“In preparation for the race, the team swam yards and yards of distance, worked on such skills as buoy turns, swimming in a group, sighting, and swimming straight without visual cues. It is a somewhat different skill set than pool swimming and offers new challenges, but good swimming is still good swimming,” she adds.
